Heating and cooling can account for 50% of home utility bills. Programmable “smart” thermostats can help to reduce heating and cooling costs and reduce energy use. Smart thermostats often have energy saving features that help to pick a temperature that can save energy. The ability to program an automated climate schedule can adjust temperatures when you are away, to prevent heating or cooling an empty home.
Smart thermostats are also eligible to participate in utility energy saving programs during high energy demand periods, such as during very hot summer days when many communities are using more energy than usual from air conditioners, pool pumps, etc. These programs allow for minor, short term adjustments to be made to the temperature that thermostats are set to, reducing power use during periods of high demand for electricity. This reduces strain on the electric system and saves you money. In most cases, you won’t even notice the adjustments and can override them if needed.
PSEG offers $85 to eligible smart thermostat owners with central air conditioning who participate in their “Smart Savers” program.
